Saa’d Cachalia – Ambassador’s Message

Serving South African Businesses within the UAE

Saa’d Cachalia - South African Ambassador to UAE

Since the mainstay of the South Africa – UAE relationship is based on economic collaboration, the South African Embassy is pleased to partner with stakeholders, such as the South African Business Council (SABCO), in order to maximise trade and investment opportunities between our two countries.  The UAE is our main trading partner within the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), and is a lucrative export market for South African products.  Many South African companies are benefitting from opportunities in the UAE in a variety of sectors, aided by the excellent air connectivity of 66 flights per week between South Africa and the UAE.

Major South African exports to the UAE include precious metals, fruits and vegetables, meat, machinery, iron/steel for construction, minerals, chemicals and prepared foodstuffs. The UAE is South Africa’s 6th largest supplier of crude oil and other exports to South Africa include iron/steel products, machinery, plastics and rubber.  More than sixty per cent of South Africa’s imports from the UAE consist of crude oil.

Hard work by a dedicated team has resulted in South African exports to the UAE showing a steady increase over the past few years, while the growing number of tourists from the UAE is equally encouraging.  Although credit should be given to efforts by the Embassy in Abu Dhabi and the Consulate General in Dubai, achievements of this nature are not possible without the active support of the SA and UAE business communities, including SABCO.

South Africa is open for business and continues to provide opportunities for investment in a market that boasts a stable democracy, incredible infrastructure and world class financial systems and services. South Africa is known as the Gateway into Africa not only because of our location on the continent bust also as a good starting point for investors.

I would like to encourage the business communities of the two countries to further exploit the numerous opportunities that are available.  You will find the South African Embassy in Abu Dhabi and the Consulate General in Dubai, in collaboration with SABCO, willing and able to provide the necessary support.
